Last of the Immortals promotes design as an agent for change in response to the climate emergency
Our first project, The Protest Sock, shines a light on the UK law that allows the silent use of plastic in clothes and textiles
Harmful substances in clothing, including plastic derived from fossil fuels, are allowed to go undeclared on product labels, echoing the greenwashing and disinformation of the sugar and tobacco industries
Last of the Immortals is inspired by the story of the Ancient Greek goddess Astræa. She was the last of the immortals to flee Earth and escape the destruction caused by man’s corruption and greed
Excessive consumption, continued greenwashing and the impact of toxic textile waste, including micro plastic pollution calls for urgent action
Astræa was calling for humanity to respect and recognise justice and Earth’s planetary boundaries
Her promised return offers hope of a new Golden Age where values are renewed and harmony and balance restored
Until then... honest labelling of all fossil fuel derived content would allow consumers to hold the textile industry to account for its material choices that contribute to the destruction of our ecosystems and climate breakdown
After years as a designer for the fashion industry I want to turn a legacy of producing landfill into a challenge to do better through design and advocate for positive change
